Leap Day

Nothing particular exciting happened today (I didn’t propose to anyone, in case you were wondering), but it was a really good day. Another set of neighbors came over to introduce themselves to us. They are a young couple, with 3 kids under the age of 5. Then Vincent and Ann came over again to meet Paddy and Lauren, and stayed to chat for about 20 minutes. I found out that Vincent used to be the principal of an Irish-speaking college for years. I’m thinking about asking him to teach me Irish one night a week (get excited, Dad!). After that, Paddy’s father (also named Patrick, like his father, and his father’s father) came over to eat dinner with us. He has been a farmer his whole life and still lives and works on his farm in County Westmeath. He is a funny man to begin with, but his accent is SO THICK and that made him 10 times funnier. When he’s not farming, he is out dancing-waltz, Irish step, you name it. I told him that I wanted to learn how to drive a tractor on his farm, so we’ll see if that happens!

With each person I meet here, I feel a little less lonely and a little more motivated to keep meeting people so I can feel like I am a part of a community. I know it takes time, but community is important and something I have been missing lately.

P.S. Today I finally bought paper and envelopes at the store and plan on writing letters soon, something I love to do…if you are my friend and would like me to write you a letter, please let me know. It just might include a special surprise from Ireland!
